Southern Crete rewards those willing to venture a little further. From lakeside views to mountain villages and coastal spots, this tour brings together some of the region's most characterful places in a single day. It's a chance to see a side of the island that many visitors miss, with plenty of free time at each stop so you can enjoy the day your own way.
Your first stop is Lake Kournas, the island's only natural freshwater lake. Spend your time however you like, whether that's taking a swim, relaxing by the shore or settling into a lakeside taverna. Then it's on to Argyroupolis, a traditional village known for its natural springs and history. Take a stroll, find a shady spot for a coffee and soak up the slower pace of village life.
Later, you'll head to Plakias on the south coast. You might fancy stretching out on the beach, browsing the village shops or settling in for a long lunch by the sea. However you choose to spend your time, there's no need to rush. On the way back to Rethymno, you'll travel through Kourtaliotis Gorge, where steep cliffs rise on either side of the road and the scenery steals the show. It's a fitting finale to a day spent discovering a quieter side of Crete.
