L'incredibile edificio neoclassico che ospite l'Altes Museum è stato costruito tra il 1823 e il 1830 dal famoso architetto Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Da più di 100 anni ospita una formidabile collezione di antichità classiche (Antikensammlung). La collezione greca è situata al piano terra del palazzo, in mostra dal 2011 in una veste completamente nuova, mentre il primo piano offre mostre speciali. Invece, dal 2010, la struttura ospita una collezione di opere e pezzi d'arte etrusche e romane.
