Start off the morning by meeting one of our local experts and boarding the comfortable van that will take you on this rich with culture, food and wine day trip. On the way to our first stop, your guide will give you an introduction about the history of the area, and what to expect throughout the day.
The first stop is a typical ‘latxa’ sheep farm dedicated to one of the oldest Basque crafts: making cheese. During the visit on the farm, you’ll not only learn about the production of an award-winning Idiazabal cheese but also take part in this process. Armed with the knowledge you’ll savor a selection of the typical cheese examples. Natural or smoked. Young or aged. All of them are made from unpasteurized sheep milk.
From the countryside, you’ll drive to a Txakoli wine D.O., a region set on the hills overlooking the ocean to try this peculiar Basque wine in a spot where it is made. You'll visit a small, sustainable winery to embrace the traditional methods of winemaking. You will dive into the world of ‘txakoli’ making process, Hondarribi Zuri and Beltza grapes and learn how to serve and pair it. Enough talking – time to try this bubbly, crisp drink!
Next up, you’ll discover beautiful Getaria. You’ll dive into the fascinating history of the village and learn about its most famous citizens like Elkano – the first man who circumnavigated the world or Balenciaga – one of the most important fashion designers of all time. Here, you'll have an opportunity to try the specialty: charcoal-grilled fish and local wine. You can watch how the chefs prepare fish on massive outdoor BBQs. You can’t go more local and authentic than that. It is a 100% zero mile meal.
It’s time to go back. You will leave Getaria behind and follow the coastal way to Zarautz and Orio from where we will drive up to Mount Igueldo. During this scenic ride, you will pass green fields, farmhouses and admire incredible views of the ocean.
