What to expect

This two-day Sahara adventure from Djerba blends desert landscapes, Berber culture and authentic village life across southern Tunisia. From ancient Ksours and palm-fringed oases to dunes stretching into the horizon, you’ll travel through some of the region’s most striking scenery before spending a night under the stars in a traditional desert camp.

Day one begins as you cross the Roman road from Djerba to the mainland, stopping first at the shimmering Chahbania Salt Lake for photos before continuing to Tataouine. Here, you’ll explore the lively local market before heading into the surrounding Berber villages and Ksours, including the hilltop village of Chenini, where sweeping views open out across the desert valleys. After lunch in a local restaurant, the journey continues to Ksar Ghilane, a desert oasis where you can choose to ride a camel or take a quad bike across the dunes. There’s also time to unwind in a natural hot spring and learn how traditional sand bread is prepared before settling into your desert camp for the night. A Bedouin-style dinner, music and storytelling under a star-filled sky complete the experience.

Wake up to sunrise over the dunes on day two and enjoy breakfast at the camp before travelling onwards to Matmata, famous for its unique troglodyte homes carved into the earth. You’ll visit the village of Tamazret to meet locals and learn about everyday Berber traditions, followed by a stop at the iconic Sidi Idriss Hotel, known for its appearance in Star Wars. After lunch at a local restaurant, the journey continues to Toujane, a mountain village celebrated for its panoramic views and traditional crafts, before returning to Djerba in the late afternoon with unforgettable desert memories.

Tunisia catamaran cruise around Djerba Island

A typically warm Tunisian welcome is waiting when you board your catamaran for this morning cruise around the island of Djerba. It's known locally as the ‘island of dreams', partly due to its deep and ancient history that goes back to Phoenician and Roman times. Plus, it's partly because of the natural beauty of the island – which you'll get to see up-close.You'll head out in the morning, cruising past Djerba's sugar-white beaches that're dotted with green palms jutting out along the shoreline. There's heaps to see while you're sprawled out on the nets at the front of the catamaran, from secluded coves and fishing villages dotted with whitewashed houses to beaches that stretch to the horizon and fancy waterfront resorts.Your captain will set a leisurely pace as you skim through the Mediterranean, allowing plenty of time to drop anchor and dive into the sea for a swim. Keep an eye out for native sea turtles, and, depending on the season, you could even catch a glimpse of a few dolphins that live in this patch of the Med.
