Visit the Accademia Gallery with an expert guide. Discover Michelangelo’s art and enjoy his most famous work, the statue of David, and other important masterpieces!
The young Michelangelo carved the statue of David in three years from a huge block of rough marble. The result is an absolutely harmonious, imposing sculpture: the real icon of the Renaissance ideal. The artist portrayed a young powerful man nude, in his full physical vigor, with an intense expression of force and courage as a plastic consequence of his absolute faith in God. Because of these characteristics, Michelangelo's David was taken as a symbol of the power and invincibility of the Republic of Florence at the height of its splendor.
In addition to Michelangelo's David, the Prisoners and San Matteo, don't miss the marvelous religious paintings by the greatest masters working in and around Florence from the second half of the 13th century to the end of the 16th century. The Museum of Musical Instruments is also worth a visit; housed inside the Academy, it displays artifacts from the historical collection of the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory in Florence.
