The inside story
A visit to Milan couldn't be complete without a visit to the Navigli Canals, where history, entertainment and beauty come together. Whether you want to enjoy a relaxed stroll on the dock or enjoy a happy hour in one of the many bars along the river, the Navigli Canals are the perfect place.
This part of the city will make you discover the link between the Milan and water, a link which dates back to the twelfth century, with the construction of the ship canal. In 1179 the Ticinello became the first canal to be inaugurated followed by the Naviglio Grande. Then came the Naviglio della Martesana.
In total, 90 kilometers of canals were built, which were made navigable by the presence of 25 sluices. At the end of the 15th century, the project was completed by the innovative system of sluices designed by Leonardo da Vinci. In 1805 Napoleon completed the construction of the Naviglio Pavese.
Today the canals of Milan are full of bars, restaurants, and old noble residences overlooking the water and creating one of the most sparkling districts of the city.
