Start your trip with the city of Reims in less than 2 hours from Paris and a few miles far from Epernay. You will discover its beautiful Cathedral built in the 13th century where most of the French Kings were crowned and also famous for the statue of Joan of Arc. You will see that the Cathedral which partially burnt down in the 11th century, was built on top of Roman Baths and mimics the gothic style of Paris’ Notre Dame.
You will rally Epernay crossing the unique landscape of the Montagne de Reims, surrounded by vineyards for 20 miles. Epernay is a typical French countryside, hall of the famous champagne estates. You will go then to the typical village of Hautvillers, home of Dom Perignon considered as the “Father of Champagne”. You will discover that Hautvillers is a “1er Cru” appellation and stretches over 275 hectares where the 3 varieties of grapes are cultivated: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay.
You will visit then the cellar of Moet & Chandon founded in 1743: an exceptional heritage bears witness to centuries of champagne elaboration. You will also visit the cellar of Mercier or Similar with Champagne tasting followed by a local Champagne producer in the historical village of Ay nearby Epernay: “La Cite du Champagne” where you will visit the Museum, the cellars, the vineyards and taste the excellent champagne Collet.
During these visits, you will have the opportunity to buy some bottles as all the cellars have their own shops.
