The inside story
The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa in Iceland, located in a lava field near Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, in a location favorable for geothermal power. Situated just 20 minutes by car from Keflavík International Airport and 50 minutes from Reykjavík, the Blue Lagoon is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland, drawing people from all over the world.
The lagoon is supplied by water used in the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power station. The water’s iconic color is a result of the way that silica reflects sunlight, with the properties of the water being 70% ocean water and 30% freshwater. The water temperature of the bathing and swimming area averages 98-102 degrees Farenheit making it the perfect trip to enjoy at any time of the year, regardless of the season.
