The inside story
Just under an hour’s drive from Dublin, the Wicklow Mountains boast some of eastern Ireland’s most beautiful landscapes. County Wicklow is known as ‘the Garden of Ireland’, and there are dozens of scenic hiking trails and drives to enjoy in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. One of the most famous is the Military Road through the haunting, barren boglands of the Sally Gap. When it comes to heritage, the monastic site of Glendalough, with its thousand-year-old Round Tower, is world-class. Glendalough’s name comes from the Gaelic for ‘Valley of the Two Lakes’, and the Upper and Lower lakes are Insta-perfect. Historically, lead, zinc and silver were mined in the mountains, and there are abandoned mining ‘ghost villages’ a stone’s throw from the Upper Lake.
