Eleni, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Because Corfu was never conquered by the Ottomans and we were ruled by Venice for four centuries, our development was very different to the other Greek islands. In fact, it was the robustness of Venetian fortifications that kept the Ottomans out.'
You'll kick things off by making your way down the narrow, cobbled streets of the capital, passing the ramparts of the old castle as you go – with your knowledgeable guide giving you plenty of insight into some quirky points of interest. Eleni says, ‘Corfu has long been strategically important, guarding the route between the Ionian and the Adriatic Sea. Over the centuries, our island has passed through the hands of Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Goths, and more recently the English and the French.
