Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Palais des Papes, built in the 14th century, consists of two buildings: the Old Palace of Benedict XII and the New Palace of Clement VI. With the HistoPad provided at the start of the tour, immerse yourself in the Middle Ages and experience the daily life of the first popes of Avignon.
This virtual experience reveals the immensity of this medieval fortress—the largest in the world—and the vastest Gothic palace ever built. Its 15,000 m² of living space is equivalent to four Gothic cathedrals. Discover the popes’ private gardens, accessible from their apartments, restored with the reconstruction of the griffin fountain and the flower-filled meadows. At the end of the tour, head up to the terraces to admire the main courtyard, the city of Avignon, and the Rhône River.
Starting May 1, 2026, a new chapter begins with the introduction of original interpretive narratives and the opening of rooms never before accessible to the public. The tour, organised around three themes, is enhanced with educational tools: interactive models, documentary films, explanatory panels, and updated signage. An immersive experience to grasp the full history, both everyday and grand, of the Palais des Papes.
Starting with this opening, the “Clés du Palais” web app will provide access to all content in six languages from any smartphone.
