Gran Canaria 2026 solar eclipse VIP tour
As the sun sets on 12th August 2026, you'll be in the most sought-after spot to see the first solar eclipse visible from Gran Canaria in over a century. The island lines up to enjoy a 74% eclipse, as the moon casts daylight into shadow and creates an otherworldly atmosphere for over 90 minutes. You'll watch the cosmos put on its most impressive show from the vantage point of the west coast's Mirador del Balcón, with views over the Atlantic.Your tour begins with a late afternoon pick-up from your hotel and a scenic journey to the west of the island in a comfortable hybrid SUV. Arrive at San Nicolás in style, with 20 minutes of free time to stroll this sleepy, tucked-away town and perhaps grab a coffee in the main square while admiring the church. The town is the gateway to Mirador del Balcón, and it takes just 15 minutes to climb the winding mountain roads in your SUV to reach 357 metres above sea level. At the top of the cliff, you'll settle into the Mirador del Balcón viewpoint and watch the eclipse begin at around 7.00pm. As you look out over the Atlantic Ocean, you'll see the famous line of spine-like, jagged coastal cliffs known as the ‘Dragon's Tail'. With your protective glasses on, you'll watch as the eclipse hits its peak before raising a glass of cava to toast this incredible celestial event. Your guide will offer commentary to explain the science and significance behind what you're watching and will even have some premium chocolates to hand out to top off the experience. The eclipse ends at around 8.45pm and after the sun drops into the Atlantic beyond the cliffs, you'll be whisked back to your hotel between 10.00pm and 11.00pm.
