The inside story
The Ara Pacis is a commemorative monument built during the first century before Christ to celebrate the long-sought-after peace between the countries of the Mediterranean. Its beautiful and majestic altar, positioned inside the interior of a closed marble structure, is immediately striking to any visitor: the intricate decoration made up of various reliefs that depict the family of Augustus in a procession is woven into a number of allegories related to the mythical foundation of Rome. A true artistical and architectural wonder, and one of the best-preserved and most iconic monuments of ancient Rome.
